A puffer bag is built differently from a canvas or leather bag. A thin layer of padding sits between two sheets of nylon, and lines of stitching hold it in place. That stitching creates the quilted channels.
This construction explains what puffer bags do well: padding and nylon weigh less than thick canvas or leather, so the bag stays light, about 470 g empty for ours, and the padding cushions bottles.
